Samuel Roberts Building

Samuel Roberts Building

We were retained to bring this historic building in downtown Tacoma back from a ruinous 1970's stucco remodel. The facade was detailed after an old 1950's photo of the building, as is the trim and accents. It is one of the oldest surviving wood-frame structures in Tacoma, according to city staff, making it not only a challenge but also an honor to redesign. We completely remodeled the interior of the building and excavated around the basement to create a full lower level. An elevator was installed to add accessibility to the three-floor building. The interior stair had been removed in the previous remodel, and the only access to the second floor was an exterior balcony on the rear side of the building.  We redesigned the interior stair at the back to provide a smooth transition to the streets of Tacoma while adding a second exit.
