Washington State University Extension and Stormwater Center administer the Low Impact Development (LID) Certification.  Low Impact Development refers to the restoration of pre-disturbance hydrologic processes of infiltration. Rainwater is allowed to soak into the land much as it has for eons before human development occurred.

Methods to allow infiltration include:

  • Pervious paving

  • Raingardens (infiltration swales)

  • Rainwater collection and retention for later use in irrigation

  • Green roofs which allow rainwater to be used by and evaporated from plants on the roof.
